The Shire Door Panel Range

Shire Door introduction

The Shire door panel range is brought to you by one of the industry's leaders. A reputation for high quality has been gained from the use of only the best material, coupled with state of the art manufacturing technology and superb service standards.

Total quality is an ethos which has been actively developed within the company, achieved through team working and constant analysis of improving performance both in product and service.

Architecturally, the entrance door is a key feature in the overall appearance of the house and should be in-keeping with the existing aesthetic styling, especially in older properties. It must also give protection, keeping out unwanted visitors or the worst of the weather.

Choosing the right door is therefore very important, within the Shire Door Panel collection you will find the perfect options. There are eighteen door designs to suit all styles of houses, each incorporates choice of colour, glazing options, insulating core options as well as accessories.

Symphony Door

A new and delightful addition to the GBW product range by accessing the finest design glazed panels from one of the oldest and traditional industry suppliers. Extracting the best from the symphony range, we are now able to add further nine full panel designs, two conservatory panels, one half panel and one quarter panel to the extensive Shire and City collections. In addition, they have incorporated the beloved Forte triple glazed and Fantasia resin bevels into the range, securing these desired products for the future.

City Door

The City collection has been created by synthesizing the myraid of design and cultural influences emanating from the great European Cities.

Recognising that lifestyle in the city is often reflected in design and function; we believe that the City Collection has captured something of the true essence of each European City. The use of strong lead designs for those southern European cities whilst applying subtle glass choices for those cities in the North, typifies this.

Residence 9

Authentic Window Designs
Solutions for planners and Homeowners in Conservation Areas

Conservation Areas
A Conservation area is an area of specific architectural or historical interest, the character or appearance of which is desirable to preserve or enhance. Many of your towns, local street scapes rely on historic windows for much or their architectural impact and character. Inappropriate, poor quality replacement windows can easily erode traditional features on historic buildings.

Article 4
Article 4 is when a planning authority applies to restrict development rights in a conservation area. Replacement windows then need planning approval and conservation area consent. This is quite rightly done to preserve architectural merit. Some planning authorities precluded the use if modern materials because the windows designs were inappropriate in size, shape and design. A more modern approach has been to approve the use of Residence 9 because of its consideration of the Article 4 directives. It has been specifically designed to replicate the documented historical window designs from the period.

'The use of modern material will be accepted provided that the window is of design, dimension, detailing and opening mechanisms are similar to the original windows'

Listed Buildings
Listed buildings are the most important buildings in the town and are protected nationally with specific control over alterations. it is generally more difficult to replace windows in these buildings and approval must be obtained via English Heritage or Historic Scotland. Whilst residence 9 is an authentic looking window it is generally preferred to repair windows in listed buildings.

Preserve Kerbside Appearance
Residence 9 is a window system designed to authentically replicate...the kerbside appearance of traditional timber window frames. This is achieved by mirroring the sizes as historically documented and as listed in many article 4 planning guidelines. Furthermore, the system is flush sash ans always dummy sash - just like the originals. residence 9 replicates the putty line chamfer externally and decorative detailing internally.

Preserve Authentic Details
Residence 9 is designed to authentically replicate.. Traditional methods of mechanically jointing window frames and sashes. Our details are authentic in appearance and are made by craftsmen Residence 9 is only sold in authentic colours and finishes.

Authentic Opening Mechanisms and Hardware
Resience 9 is designed to authentically replicate..traditional opening mechanisms and hardware including butt hinges, monkey tail handles and peg stays.

Invest in traditional Buildings
Rotten windows can destroy the building envelope through damp etc.. Residence 9 will help restore weather tightness, keep heat in and moisture out preserving our period housing stock for the next generation. specify Residence 9 - the authentic 'flush sash' window solution.

Can you tell from this picture - Which Windows are Wooden and which are Residence 9??

General advice and things to consider when choosing your Conservatory

Why a conservatory and why choose PVC?

Conservatories have several distinct advantages over flat roofed or tiled, brick-built home extensions and, depending on the style you choose, they can also work out to be considerably cheaper to construct.

Conservatories are;

  • One of the best ways to add value to your property
  • Ideal for those wanting to increase their living space without adversely affecting the amount of light that enters their home.
  • Relatively easy to install and complete
  • Versatile enough to offer multi-purpose room for all the family.
  • Arguably a more attractive and stylish way of extending and enhancing the appearance of your home.
  • In the majority of cases, exempt from building regulations and do not require planning permission.
PVCu is;

  • Very durable and won't swell, warp, crack or rot
  • Virtually maintenance free.
  • Light yet strong, with multi-chambered frame design that offers better levels of insulation in comparison to timber and aluminium
  • The perfect match for replacement PVCu windows and doors.
  • Equally as stylish as timber framed buildings.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT DESIGN

Before you go ahead and order, make sure that the design you're picking is ideally suited to match the style of your property. A well designed conservatory should complement and enhance the look of existing architecture. Most retailers can simulate how the chosen design will look with the use of specialist software, to help make your decision a little simpler. It's also worth confirming that the building materials and, in particular, the bricks match with the existing masonry in style and colour. The positioning of doors and number of opening windows is also worth giving careful consideration to. And, don't forget that you don't have to restrict yourself to the more conventional designs - conservatories can be tailor made to fit in, or on, corners of your home or anywhere else come to that.

Size Matters
As a general rule, always try and go for the biggest size your budget will stretch to, whilst bearing in mind that the building will need to look in proportion to your existing property. An area of approximately nine square metres is probably the minimum amount of room required to enjoy a conservatory and consider the possible cost savings of a lean-to over a period-style design if you need more space for your money.

North, South, East or West?

The positioning of your conservatory will influence the ambience of the room at particular times during the day. In general the following applied;

North Facing; Subjected to the colder side of our climate but enjoying some morning sun.

South Facing; The warmth of a conservatory on the sunny side of your property will be appreciated by both people and plants. Sufficient ventilation and shading will help to keep the room at a comfortable temperature during really hot spells.

East Facing; Benefits from early morning sun, making it an ideal breakfast room.

West Facing; Fairly well lit at the start of the day and benefits from warmth of the sun in the afternoons and evenings - perfect for entertaining and dinner parties or simply somewhere to relax at the end of the day.
