PVCu V's TIMBER

By replacing your windows, you can update the look of your house, improve the amount of light and air flow in your home, increase your homes energy efficiency, and provide easier window operation, cleaning and maintenance.

Not just Windows - Rigid PVC-u, made by Deceunick, is used in the manufacture of roofline products. It is particularly appreciated for its resilience in all types of weather conditions, excellent resistance to chemical and atmospheric agents, and low maintenance requirements.

So what to go for? PVC-u or timber frames?

Maintenance free PVC-u is the most popular choice.
PVC-u is the most popular type of replacment window, and is excellent alternative to wood. Like wood windows, PVC-u windows offer good insulation value and strength, and they don't require any maintenance, like no painting or staining, and unlike timber, PVC-u exhibits excellent fire behavior and it does not burn once the source of heat or flame has been removed.

The only maintenance your PVC-u windows will need is simple cleaning, because you'll never need to paint them.

PVC-u windows and doors are durable and long lasting, weather resistance, impervious to termites, insects or rats, sun protective, reliable for rain protection, rotten proof, will not support combustion, low maintenance, easy to clean, safe from burglars due to its strength and can be recycled.
With PVC-u windows you have the greatest variety to choose from. There are many shapes, styles and colours, and they are available in a wide range of prices to suit virtually and budget.
You will be able to find PVC-u windows in all the standard sized, which make installation easier and less costly, and PVC-u windows can be easily customised for unique needs and preference.
When purchasing windows, consider factors other than the up-front purchase price. windows with higher energy efficiency ratings will save you money on your heating and cooling costs for painting, both now and in the future. Cheaper windows may need to be replaced sooner than more durable windows.

All new and replacement windows now have to be double glazed to cut heat loss. Consequently, wooden window frames have given way to PVC framed double glazing, which is cheaper to buy and install than double glazing timber frames.

Some people who have had white PVC-u windows in the past say that, after a few years, the frames can appear discoloured due to the weathering of the black gaskets. Deceuninck make their profiles with a revolutionary neutral grey eye line gasket that not only lasts longer, but will keep your windows whiter and brighter.

Facts about double glazing

Myth - Planning permission is needed to replace windows

Fact –Planning permission for replacing windows is needed only for listed buildings, for homes in conservation areas, and for flats.

Myth – Condensation on windows is something you have to live with

Fact - By installing well insulated (or Low E) double glazing,Condensation problems on the room-side of the window can be greatly reduced. If the double glazed unit incorporates warm edge (or thermal break) spacers, condensation can be reduced still further. In a properly sealed double glazed unit there should be relatively little condensation in the window’s inner cavity as dehydrated air and desiccants are used.

Myth - Secondary glazing is just as energy efficient as double glazing

Fact – The insulation properties of secondary glazing are far lower than those offered by true double glazing – and especially those offered by Low E double glazing. Houses with secondary glazing will be score a poor energy rating on the new compulsory Energy Performance Certificate – which is now required for the sale of any home.

Myth - All Low E glasses offer the same levels of energy saving

Fact – The U (or energy saving) value of Low E glasses can vary by up to 25%. The most efficient Low E glasses have a special coating applied online using a process known as magnetron sputtering. This coating stops indoor heat from escaping but allows natural heat energy from the sun to pass into the room (Solar Heat Gain). Only double glazed units which combine high performance Low E glass with warm edge spacers and argon gas fillings are capable of achieving an ‘A’ grade on the official Window Energy Ratings scale.

Myth - Offline coatings are fragile and easily damaged

Fact - Offline coatings, which are applied after the basic sheet glass has been manufactured and cut, were previously considered less resistant than online coatings. However, the latest magnetron coating technologies mean than offline coatings are now far more durable and can even be heat treated for toughening. The new magnetron coatings also give glass superior clarity and transparency.

Myth - If argon gas is used to fill double glazed units, it can leak into the room

Fact - Argon gas fillings should last the lifetime of a double glazing unit and should not leak by more than 5% over a period of 25 years.

Between Glass Blind;

Have you ever thought about Between Glass Blinds?

They offer a versatile and contemporary means of privacy and shading suitable for large door panels, screens, office partitioning, store fronts, residential glazing. They also provide the ideal solution for sliding and bi-fold doors where an external and obstructive blind cannot be used.

The blinds unit are all hermetically sealed double glazed panels filled with argon as a normal sealed unit, sealed between the glass is a fully operable Venetian blind which is maintenance free and protected from moisture, dust and damage.

Manual units are operated via a neat sliding magnetic block located down the sides of the units. The magnets are colour matched to the blind slats and profile to ensure they blend in seamlessly with the rest of the unit unlike other systems which are controlled by a cumbersome cord or wand. The magnets are slick and easy to operate and users can specify their location around the perimeter of the sealed unit to suit specific environments. this cordless system is also safe and child-friendly making them ideal for hospitals and other public buildings.

The motors powering the blinds are concealed within the internal head rail of the unit to ensure noise is kept to an absolute minimum.

  • Complete maintenance free - fully integral system protected from moisture, damage and dust.
  • Stylish and safe design with no external cords making them ideal for public buildings.
  • The ideal solution for sliding and bi-fold doors where an external and obtrusive blind cannot be used.

Handling Double Glazing Sales People!

Double glazing installation is something that can provide you with many benefits, enhancing your quality of life at home as well as improving security, property value, and the aesthetic appeal of your home. However, if you are planning to have double glazing fitted one thing you need to do is make sure you don’t get railroaded into choosing a particular company before you've had the chance to look around for the best deals.
In order to ensure you get the right double glazing and a good deal, it is important to have a double glazing salesperson come to your home to assess your needs and provide you with pricing. It’s one thing if you actually contact a company to ask for a sales representative to come to your home and do this. However, if you find yourself opening the door to a cold-calling salesperson, you may need to be on your guard.

Tactics to look out for

Double glazing salesmen who turn up at your home without an appointment are generally trained to hard-sell, which means that they will use all sorts of tactics to try and get you to make a rush decision and sign on the dotted line. While they are trained to make everything they say sound tempting, you need to bear in mind that much of what they say is part of a sales script designed to rush you into a decision.
Some of the tactics to look out for include:
  • Special deal for today only: A salesman may tell you that you can get a really big discount on the cost of supply and installation but that the offer is for one day only, which means that you need to decide and commit today in order to benefit. This is a common sales tactic that you should avoid falling for.
  • Speak to the manager: Many salesmen will make consumers think they are getting an extra special deal by telling them they are going to ‘ring their manager’ to negotiate a discount. They then get on the phone and come back to you with a knock down price that has apparently been reluctantly agreed by the manager. Again, this is another common tactic you need to avoid falling for.
  • Buy the front windows and get the back ones free: In the current climate no company can afford to send sales reps out and offer 50 percent discounts to all customers. The chances are that the prices on the front windows will be so inflated that you will end up paying for the back ones by default.

Do your own research

Of course, there is no harm letting the salesperson come in and provide you with prices for your double glazing if this is something you are looking to have installed – if nothing else, it will give you practise in how to handle and avoid high pressure sales tactics. One thing you should never do, however, is give in and sign on the dotted line on the basis of the ‘special offers’ that the salesperson presents to you.
Instead, make a note of the price that the company has given to you as a ‘special deal’ and once they've gone you can get online and see if you can get the work done by another reputable company at a lower price.

Burglary

  • Every year, there are over 1 million burglaries and attempted burglaries.
  • A burglary happens every 40 seconds in the UK.
  • Most burglaries are not pre-planned but are committed by opportunistic criminals.
  • Burglary victimisation occurs in 6% of cases when no or less than basic security, and 1% of cases where basic or enhanced security exists, in other words where there is  window locks and double locks or deadlocks on outside doors.
  • A poll by Halifax found out 34% of householders with an alarm fitted to their home said they rarely activated it while a further 33% also said that they assume sounding burglar alarms in their neighbourhood to be false.
  • 73% of burglars use doors, which are open in 3% of cases.
  • 64% of householders also confessed to occasionally leaving doors unlocked whilst away from home and a further 37% whilst inside the home – even though statistics show that 22% of burglaries are carried out with the thief aware that the home was occupied.
  • Infographics say that 57% of burglaries occur when someone is at home.
  • Through a Victim Support Survey, it has been discovered that 1 in 4 victims have had their house broken into more than once.
  • A British survey has found that repeat victims are likely to make up between 60-80% of all crime incidents.
  • Most likely break-in and burglary victims are single-parent families in urban UK areas as they are affected twice more than homes with two parents, and thrice more than households without children.
  • Urban residents are twice more susceptible to be burglars’ targets than rural dwellers.
  • 56% of burglaries happen at night.
  • Most burglaries take place after dark; 10% occur in the morning, 20% in the afternoon, 32% in the evening and 23% during the night, whereas 30% occur in the weekend.

What gets burgled?
  • Property is stolen in 40% of cases.
  • According to Infographics for 2009-2011, most stolen items are cash-17%, computers-15%, cameras and mp3s-13%, jewelry-11%, mobile phones-6%.
  • The ONS has provided figures, which state that burglars nowadays tend to prey for mobile phones during robberies rather than wallets and cash, which are represented by 43%, 38% and 37% respectively.
  • Theft of computer equipment is now twice as common as in 1995.
  • Five in 100 households were victims of vehicle-related crimes in the year, compared with around 20 in 100 households in 1995, a drop of 71%.
  • Burgled property is actually returned in 9% of cases.

With all of these facts in mind, are you making sure that everything is locked before going out? With this hot weather a lot of people just do not think and leave that window open for ventilation.

Glass....... Is it that important?

Are glass options that important when choosing new double glazing? The answer is of course yes, we only use the best, why should you have planitherm installed?

  1. What is PLANITHERM?

Planitherm is a new generation of energy saving window glass that uses an advanced coating to retain more internal heat and to absorb free energy from natural daylight, designed for use in a double glazed unit. That means lower energy bills compared to standard windows but for about the same cost.
Using the latest technology, planitherm has a unique combination of metallic layers, which reflect heat back into a room, to keep heat within the building. At the same time maximising the amount of natural light coming in. as more heat retained, it means less is required to warm up the home to the desired ambient temperature, in turn lowering energy consumption.

2. Why should i have planitherm installed in my windows?

There are a number of reasons why you should have planitherm installed in your windows. Firstly, government building regualtions require us to use CO2 emissions and protect the environment. Planitherm is the most energy efficient window glass available. Using planitherm is an easy and efficient way of complying with these regualtions whilst offering a number of benefits.

  • Free Solar Gain - Planitherm uses advanced coating technology to capture free energy from natural daylight to help heat you home.
  • Thermal Insulation - The advanced coating reflects heat back into the room, meaning less energy is needed to heat the home to the desired temperature.
  • Optimal Window Energy Rating - Planitherm combines with  virtually any window frame to achieve a window energy rating (WER) of C and an A rating is easier to achieve allowing compliance with building regs.
  • Haze & tint Free Windows - Planitherm maximises the amount of natural light into the home, without haze or tint effects associated with older double glazed Windows.
  • Eliminated Condensation - Planitherm helps to virtually eliminate internal condensation, reducing draughts and cold spots in and around the windows.
3. I have double glazing; does this mean my windows are energy efficient? Of course all old, uncoated, double glazing offers a limited level of heat retention. However, Building Regulations now state that an energy efficient window glass must be used in all replacement windows and a double glazed unit containing planitherm is on average 40% more thermally efficient than standard non-coated double glazing.

4. Is the coating on the glass permanent? Yes, the coating is permanent and hermetically sealed with the glass unit so will last the lifetime of the Windows.

5. If planiterm lets the sun in, does it let anything out? The glass has a very thin, transparent metallic coating that reflects heat back into the room, rather than allowing it to escape through the windows. At the same time it allows heat from the sun to pass through the glass to warm the room, meaning it takes less energy to maintain a warm comfortable home.

6. Is the performance of planitherm proven? Yes, the performance of planitherm meets the requirements of Class C of European Standards BS EN 1096 and carries the relevant CE marking.

7. What is a Window Energy Rating? - A Window energy rating (WER) is a system for demonstrating the energy efficiency of a Window. The labeling used is similar to those seen on applications such as a fridge or freezer offering an easy method for comparison. To check a Windows energy efficiency before you buy, look at the energy label. The ratings range from A to G with a C- rating being the minimum rating required for compliance with currant building regs. It considers three aspects of performance.
  • Amount of heat loss
  • Amount of solar heat gain
  • The air leakage of the assembly
